Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) is one of the nation’s most respected groups of cardiologists, cardiovascular surgeons and thoracic surgeons, representing nearly every specialty in heart and vascular medicine. While most leading medical centers are located in a single facility within a large city, CIS and its staff of more than 500 dedicated team members and nearly 40 physicians bring comprehensive cardiovascular care close to home by serving patients in more than 10 locations throughout south Louisiana.
CIS offers a comprehensive heart and vascular program that includes specialized medical professionals trained in nuclear cardiology, electrophysiology, prevention services, and lipid management, as well as interventional cardiovascular procedures and cardiovascular and thoracic surgery. CIS is a world-leader in treating peripheral arterial disease.
CIS has made significant contributions to the development of non-surgical treatments for cardiovascular disease. Because the institute is on the leading edge of technology in this field, patients can be assured that each case is thoroughly reviewed and all available treatment options are considered.
Surgical services offered by CIS are extensive. These services are comparable, and often superior, to those offered at large medical centers in metropolitan areas.
CIS is constantly expanding services to meet the medical needs of the population. CIS offers the fastest computed tomography (CT) scan system available today and trains others from across the nation in its use.
Nearly 50 percent of the adult population suffers from some form of vein disease. This is another vascular medical need that has been addressed by CIS with the opening of the Vein Center in Lafayette. This center offers the latest in minimally invasive procedures to treat varicose veins and other venous disorders.
CIS has not only earned an international reputation for providing state-of-the-art heart and vascular care, but has also received international acclaim as a leader of research and development in the field, participating in a growing number of research trials. CIS physicians serve as clinical investigators for many new and innovative medical devices, and often share their knowledge by lecturing around the country about the latest methods of treating both cardiac and peripheral arterial disease.

The continued growth of CIS facilities is evidence of the dynamic institute’s commitment to bring quality medical services to the people of south Louisiana in convenient locations. In 2003 and 2004, ribbons were cut to celebrate the opening of new, state-of-the-art Heart and Vascular Centers in Lafayette and Houma. In March of 2004, CIS and Opelousas General Health System announced the creation of the Heart and Vascular Institute, part of an expansion plan at the hospital that will enhance cardiovascular services. An expansion and renovation of CIS Thibodaux was completed in 2007, and construction of a new, larger facility in New Iberia was completed in 2008. CIS Raceland and the Family Doctor Clinic of Mathews are both currently undergoing renovations.
Cardiovascular Institute of the South’s guiding mission is simple: To provide the best care in an area with one of the highest incidences of heart and vascular disease in the industrialized world. A combination of vision for the future and constant growth is the formula that allows CIS to successfully fulfill that mission each and every day.
Our mission is to provide our patients with the highest quality cardiovascular care available. We pledge ourselves to:
