Your Guide to:
E-Prescriptions Give your prescription a head start.
what is an e-prescription?
E-Prescriptions are computer-generated prescriptions created by your doctor and sent directly to your pharmacy.
how does e-prescribing work?
Instead of writing out your prescription on a piece of paper, your doctor will enter it directly into a computer. E-Prescriptions are sent electronically through a private, secure, and closed network so that your prescription information is safe.
how long will it take to get my prescription?
E-Prescriptions are convenient because they arrive at the pharmacists' computer before you leave your doctor's office. However, please allow time for your pharmacy to process the request.
can my prescription be sent to the pharmacy of my choice?
Yes. More than 75% of community pharmacies in the U.S. currently accept e-prescriptions, and more are doing so every day. If you do not want your prescription sent electronically, or if your pharmacy does not accept e-prescriptions, your doctor will print your prescription for you.
are there laws governing the privacy of e-prescriptions?
The privacy of your personal health information, whether written or electronic, is protected by federal and state laws. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is a federal law which requires that your personal health information be shared only for the purpose of providing you with clinical care. E-Prescriptions meet this requirement.
