Venous disease can be a source of pain and discomfort for those who live with the condition, and it can also pose serious health risks. Affected individuals may lose confidence or feel embarrassed about the way they look if it takes the form of varicose veins. They may wonder, “Why do my legs ache?” without understanding the root of the problem. Without treatment, like many health issues, venous disease typically worsens without proper diagnosis and treatment. But the important thing for people living with venous disease to remember is that there is hope. Science, medicine, and technology have made great progress when it comes to diagnosing and treating venous disease. Cardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS), a world leader in cardiovascular care, offers safe, innovative, and effective venous treatments through its Leg & Vein Center. Learn more about venous disease and how it can affect the body below. And discover why our Leg & Vein Center may be the right choice to relieve your symptoms and give you healthy, beautiful legs again.
Venous disease occurs when veins cannot achieve proper blood flow, preventing blood from returning to the heart. Damaged vein walls become ineffective at circulating blood from the veins back to the heart. The weakened vein walls allow blood to pool and collect in the veins, eventually flowing backwards.
The added pressure can eventually cause aches and pains throughout the affected legs. It can also create increased pressure in the veins, which may then become engorged and twisted. Over time, these circulation problems can develop into more severe cardiovascular conditions.
Engorged and misshapen veins are also commonly referred to as varicose veins. These winding, protruding veins appear most commonly in the legs. Some varicose veins may appear large, but they may not actually be painful. On the other hand, some varicose veins may be small or barely noticeable, but they can be incredibly uncomfortable and painful.
If you suffer from spider or varicose veins, schedule an appointment at one of our clinics for a diagnosis. It’s better to take action when you notice symptoms as they will likely worsen if the condition is left untreated.
Thrombophlebitis is an inflammation of the vein that occurs due to a blood clot. Superficial thrombophlebitis can manifest as a red vein accompanied by general soreness in the area. This is typically considered a mild or minor condition. However, deep-vein thrombophlebitis often occurs with no easily identifiable symptoms during its early stages.
As the condition becomes more advanced, symptoms such as swelling in the extremities, redness, and dermatitis may occur. Deep-vein thrombosis is a serious health condition that can result in pulmonary embolism and impaired venous blood flow. If you believe you may be suffering from deep-vein thrombophlebitis, seek emergency medical help immediately.
There are several symptoms that can signal that it’s time to schedule an appointment. These symptoms can range from mild to severe in terms of pain and discomfort. But, if you notice any of the following in your legs, it may be time to see one of our specialists:
You should seek immediate medical care if your legs become swollen for no apparent reason. This can be a sign of either a blood clot or another type of serious cardiovascular condition.
